Located in the northeast part of Zhejiang province, Shangyu is 62km away from Ningbo to the west, 70km away from the provincial capital Hangzhou to the east, Hangzhou Bay in north and Shanghai City on the opposite bank of river. Belonging to the flourishing Shanghai economic circle, Shangyu occupies an area of 1427 square kilometers with a Population of 780,000. Here belongs to subtropical monsoon climate, warm and humid. Shangyu, which was set up in 222 BC, has a long history. In 1992, county was cancelled and city was set up. It is among the first batch of Open Coastal Cities approved by State Department, Top 100 County (City) of Comprehensive Force in China, and Advanced County (City) of Technology in China.
Shangyu Economic Development Zone was set up in Oct. of 1992. In Nov. of 1993, it was assessed as a provincial grade economic development zone. Separated by Cao’e river from the city zone, it is connected with the city by eight bridges. Therefore, it becomes a significant component of Shangyu. The planned area is 31 square kilometers, and 13.8 square kilometers have been finished constructing. With the development of more than a decade, Shangyu Economic Development Zone has become a synthetical garden-city with modern flavour on the whole.
Investment Environment improves in a brighter trend. Shangyu Economic Development Zone carries out its constructing according to scientific projects and reasonable layout, and puts high-starting-point and high-standard regional construction surrounding into effect. Basic facilities such as traffic condition, power, water and energy supply etc inside the zone are well furnished with more than RMB 20 billion having been invested. While drinking water which gains the first-grade certainty as well is adaptable for the investment of various projects. A complete set of service terms has been perfectly formed, and a service center offering the free whole-courses services to foreign investors has been established. Besides, there is a living area of 2 square kilometers in the zone, with more than 60,000 people, which has become an important part of Shangyu City.
After more than ten years’ development, Shangyu economic development zone has formed an industrial area with the electromechanical integration, the environmental protection and energy-saving, the light industry spinning and weaving, the new building materials, Photovoltaic Industry etc as its key items. Thereinto, the integration of machinery industry mainly produces each kind of electrical machinery, air conditioning, refrigerator, automobile fitting, numerical-control machine tool, bearing and so on, accounts for 49% of the total output value of the garden area; the environmental protection and energy-saving industry mainly produces energy-saving lamp, environmental appliance and environmental equipment, etc, accounts for 20.7%; the light industry spinning and weaving industry mainly produces upscale dyed poplin, gauze, sock, glove, clothing and so on, accounts for 11.8%; the building materials industry mainly produces cement, new-style wall, plastic and steel goods and so on, accounts for 5%. Companies like Panasonic, Philips, one of the world top 500, have already found their own place in the development zone.
Transportation advantages comes into sight in a broader sphere. It has a superior geographical environment whose location is in the middle of five large cities: Suzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo and Wenzhou. Its distance to Ningbo is 62km in east, to Hangzhou is 70km in west, to Shanghai and Suzhou is 220km in north, and to Wenzhou is 250km in south. With the total length of 36 kilometers, the Hangzhou Bay Cross-sea Bridge which is completed and began to have transport service is south to the NINGBO CIXI city, north to the JIAXING HAIYAN city ,it is the longest cross sea bridge in the world as well as the best difficulty one during its construction in the world. While the bridge make the delta region of yangtze river integration and also bring the great opportunity unprecedented to the SHANGYU CITY. With total length of 67km, the shaojia grate bridge to be built over the sea at Hangzhou Bay starts at the junction of Shangyu-Sanmen Expressway and Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway in the economic zone, and ends at the junction of Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway and Zhapu-Jiaxing-Suzhou Expressway. The distance between Shangyu and Shanghai will be shortened by 130km after the bridge constructed.
The fruits of investment are brilliant and fascinate. The economic zone views the development of projects as the last straw and enlarges its investment with non-stop. More than 400 industrial enterprises, 170 of which are from 15 different foreign countries, have settled in the zone, with a total investment capital of 120 billion yuan. By now, USD 830 million foreign capitals are utilized according to the contracts, and USD 380 million in reality. Sales volume of industry exceeds RMB 20.6billion till 2005 with the pure profits of RMB2.41 billion each year. The top 500 company Philip and Panasonic forms a partnership in capital for initiating a new project in the Zone.
Shangyu Economic development Zone takes development and innovation as the theme to improve the open level and make efforts to build an export-oriented and high-technical zone. It will devote to the contribution of expanding the open policy and accelerating the economic development.
